Undergraduate researchers make a name for themselves at statewide conference

Several Georgia Regents University undergraduate students made a name for themselves this year across the state of Georgia.

Diamond Jenkins Wright, Taylohr Brown and Walter Quiller presented their research, titled “Text Mining and Digital Humanities: Quantitative Analysis of African American Poetry,” at Albany State University’s 4th Annual Regional Undergraduate Research Symposium on Oct. 29.

The three were also selected to present their research at the Georgia Undergraduate Research Conference (GURC), held at Georgia Southern University on Nov. 6.

The students’ project was the result of the GRU Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship’s 2015 Summer Scholars Program. The students’ faculty mentor was Dr. Seretha Williams, a professor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages.

Several other GRU students joined Wright, Brown and Quiller at GURC.

Delphine Baumert, a student assistant in the Department in Chemistry and Physics, presented her paper, titled “Investigation of the Properties of Stem Loop DNA.” Her faculty mentor was Dr. Angie Spencer, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics.

Iarina Devos presented a research poster, titled “Communicating Culture Through a Zumba Class.” Her faculty mentor was Dr. Rick Kenney, chair of the Department of Communications.

And last but certainly not least, Adam Judy and Sean Mongan, working alongside The Ohio State University student Nilabhra Sanyal, presented “Development of an Interactive Course-Module: Understanding the Molecular Basis of Human Evolution and Its Use in Personalized Health Care.” Judy and Mongan’s faculty mentor was Dr. Soma Mukhopadhyay, instructor in the Department of Biological Sciences.
