First ever Experiential Learning Week celebrates 10 years of CURS

Celebrating all things “Learning-By-Doing,” Experiential Learning Week kicks off on Monday, March 12 at noon in room UH-170 with a keynote presentation from Dr. Paul Matthews, associate director of the University of Georgia Office of Service-Learning.

What can faculty do to get students active and working to address real-world needs? An expert in Experiential Learning, Matthews will walk faculty members through the process of designing and implementing impactful service-learning courses during his presentation, Academic Service-Learning: High-Impact Experiential Learning. Faculty will learn about and have a chance to discuss best practices in experiential learning examples across a wide range of disciplines.

Monday, March 12

 Teaching Knowledge, Skills and Abilities in an Interactive Role-Playing Simulation

This interactive workshop introduces how learners take on different roles, assuming a profile of a character or personality, and interact and participate in diverse and complex learning settings. You will join a simulation of a Congressional hearing to evaluate the work of the USDA in developing the Food Pyramid. Participants in this session will role-play a members of Congress, lobbyist, or government scientist, and will debate food science, nutrition, and politics in 1991.

Providing Experiential Learning Opportunities to Online Students

Dr. David Joyner, senior research associate and associate director of student experience in Georgia Tech’s College of Computing (Sponsored by the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences).

Courses delivered online and at a distance can still offer plenty of opportunities to provide experiential learning opportunities for students. However, the nature of the experiences and the methods for delivering, monitoring and evaluating them are nuanced. From facilitating project-based learning experiences online to incorporating interviews with industry experts to offering online career planning and placement services, Dr. Joyner will share his first-hand perspective with EXL in Georgia Tech’s highly-successful Online Master of Science in Computer Science program.

Project-Based Learning and Career Readiness Across Disciplines

Dr. Christen Heckman, Dr. Andy Hauger, Anna Harris-Parker

This session addresses how project-based learning in the classroom can prepare students across disciplines for the transition from university coursework to challenging careers. The presenters will discuss their experience with student projects in diverse pedagogical contexts: a literary magazine production course for creative writers; a 3D game project in a medieval literature course; and electronics projects for beginning physics students. Session participants will collaborate in a team-based micro-project integrating creativity with technology.
