This week and next: Active shooter response trainings provide valuable safety information

The Augusta University Police Department will be holding a series of active shooter response trainings on both the Summerville and Health Sciences Campus.

“We offer these trainings periodically, but we wanted to be responsive to any questions that came up from our community in the aftermath of the shooting incident at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing home as well as the recent school shootings in Parkland, Florida,” said James Lyon, chief of the Augusta University Police Department.

The trainings, which each last about an hour, will include a multi-media presentation and a question and answer session.

In addition to these trainings, Lyon says further opportunities can be provided at the department level if requested.

“We are always happy to come to departments at the university or AU Health to deliver active shooter trainings,” Lyon said. “CEPaR (the Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response) will also work with individual departments to ensure they have developed emergency plans and continuity of operations plans.”
