UGA wide receiver shares literacy story at education conference

AUGUSTA, Ga. — University of Georgia wide receiver and children’s book author Malcolm Mitchell will be the opening speaker for Augusta University’s 18th Annual Impacting Student Learning (ISL) Conference. This one-day event will be held Saturday, March 5, from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the institution’s University Hall.

Mitchell will sign copies of his highly acclaimed children’s book The Magician’s Hat at 7:45 a.m. followed by his presentation at 8:30 a.m. in which he will share how he became avid reader and published author.

Mitchell admits he did not begin improving his reading skills until after his freshmen year of college.  However, once his interest in literacy became apparent, he joined a  book club and founded the nonprofit organization Read With Malcolm to bring awareness to children’s literacy.

His inspirational story won him the College Sports Media Awards’ Outstanding Special Feature and has been shared nationally on the CBS Evening News, ESPN and USA Today.

The ISL Conference is hosted by Augusta University’s College of Education and focuses on practical strategies for enhancing P-12 student learning. For more information, call 706-667-4368.
