College of Science and Mathematics revels in inaugural Scholarship Luncheon

The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) at Augusta University recently hosted its first Scholarship Luncheon on Oct. 24, bringing together scholarship recipients, donors, faculty and university leaders to celebrate student achievement and the impact of philanthropic support.

The event highlighted 30 students, 12 donors and the college’s commitment to academic excellence, research and preparing the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and healthcare professionals.

Held on the university’s Summerville Campus in the Jaguar Student Activities Center (JSAC) Dr. Roscoe Williams Ballroom, the luncheon provided students with an opportunity to meet the individuals whose generosity helps make their educational goals possible. Throughout the event, attendees shared stories, mentorship and the transformative effect scholarships have on student success.

CSM offers a variety of scholarships that support students across disciplines including biology, chemistry, mathematics, neuroscience, physics and biophysics. These awards help students focus on their studies, research experiences and career development opportunities.

“The scholarship luncheon was a great way to connect with the donors that make our education possible. The donors went from distant benefactors to real people we could connect with, while giving them a chance to see how their support is being put to good use,” said Greyling Boers, a senior physics major with a concentration in nuclear science.

Students reflected on how scholarship support has allowed them to pursue undergraduate research, participate in campus organizations and prepare for graduate and professional school opportunities. Several expressed gratitude not only for the financial assistance, but also for the confidence donors have placed in their potential.

“Being recognized at the luncheon was a meaningful reminder of the support behind my education. I am grateful for the Georgia Power Scholarship, which helps me pursue my biology degree and work towards my goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon,” said KingDavid Nwankwo, a junior biology major.

Donors, in turn, heard how their gifts are shaping futures. Conversations around each table reinforced a shared belief that educational access and opportunity can create lasting benefits for students, families and communities.

“I hope that the recipient of this scholarship will remember and cherish the camaraderie of caring faculty and fellow classmates, especially those who endure many study hours in labs or sites on campus,” said scholarship donor Anita Wylds. “These long-lasting friendships and an education will prepare you for your future.

“Augusta College prepared me so well,” Wylds continued. “My college years remain some of the best years of my life. I would do it all again, as there is so much more to offer students now. My husband Henry and I hope that the recipients will always have a passion for Augusta University.”

The luncheon reflected CSM’s commitment to fostering student success through academic excellence. It also highlighted the meaningful impact of scholarship support, bringing together donors and students to share stories, celebrate achievements and build connections.

University leaders expressed hope that the inaugural event will become a lasting tradition, strengthening relationships between scholarship recipients and those who make these opportunities possible. Ultimately, the luncheon celebrated achievement, opportunity and the shared commitment to ensuring students have the resources they need to thrive at Augusta University.
