The Occupational Therapy Department sent a team of five OT students to produce “Sensory Box Protocol” to assist residents at Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home who may self-calm with tactile, olfactory and auditory stimuli.
Taylor Hazelwood, Jenna Johnson, Aaron Kirkpatrick, Carly Pogson and Carolina Smith presented their sensory kits at Georgia War’s fourth floor. The kits contained fidget cubes, tactile bracelets, stress balls, sensory–tactile balls, hand rollers, sensory glove and board and a weighted lap blanket. The objects allow residents to seek and accept the stimulation they find most calming and comforting on a highly individualized basis. The residents enjoyed the benefits of seeking stress relief, a more relaxed attitude and greater acceptance of peers and the stimulation of a busy unit.
