Volunteers needed for Costa Layman Health Fair

The College of Nursing at Augusta University is calling on the university’s health care professionals to participate in the 14th annual Costa Layman Health Fair on Friday, June 28, in Trenton, South Carolina.

The student-run health fair is an interdisciplinary effort among faculty, students and volunteers that provides rural farmworkers bilingual access to health care education and services, including pulmonary screenings, vision checks, blood pressure screenings and dental exams.

Hundreds of farm employees are expected to attend this year, and Interdisciplinary Costa Layman Community Outreach Program Director Dr. Pam Cromer is encouraging medical volunteers to assist the College of Nursing in providing care to as many workers as possible.

“This annual event means a lot to our institution since some of these workers have limited access to health care or have not seen a doctor since last year’s free physicals event,” said Cromer. “Over the years, the health fair has provided more than 5,000 screenings, and we will continue using this outreach program to bring together teams of expert health care providers to identify community health care needs and increase access to care.”

Medical volunteers are needed to assist with exams from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Costa Layman Nurseries at 73 Greenhouse Road, Trenton, South Carolina. Sign up here.

In addition to students, faculty and alumni of the College of Nursing, screenings are supported by the university’s Medical College of Georgia, Dental College of Georgia, College of Allied Health Sciences, Institute of Public and Preventative Health, the Ryan White Program, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship and Recruitment Divisions, as well as local community leaders and volunteers.
