Van Tuyll, Bulla to take over editorship of The Southeastern Review of Journalism

The future of journalism may be uncertain, but its history is in good hands. In spring 2018, the first edition of the newly renamed The Southeastern Review of Journalism History (previously The Atlanta Review of Journalism History) will launch under new leadership.

Dr. Debra van Tuyll, professor of communication, will serve as editor-in-chief, and Dr. David Bulla, chair of the department of communication, will serve as managing editor.

In addition to being housed at Augusta University, the journal will also help students break into the field of academic publishing. A new course offering will give students the opportunity to work on the journal, opening up avenues in communication careers often overlooked by other universities.

“The course represents a way of helping students get a skill that maybe they’re not thinking about, or to find a new career path,” van Tuyll said.

The journal will focus primarily on publishing student papers at both the graduate and undergraduate level, hearkening back to its roots as a student-focused publication originally housed at Georgia State University. Submissions are encouraged from students who have presented their work at mass communication conferences. Faculty submissions will also be accepted.

As one of only a handful of universities in the country with a focus on journalism history, van Tuyll believes having the journal here will give journalism students a leg up over the competition.

“Our perspective is you can’t be a good practitioner if you don’t know the history of the field,” she said.
