The University System of Georgia celebrates Academic Recognition Day annually, spotlighting remarkable students from each of the system’s 26 public colleges and universities. In addition to honoring Kristin Backer, who just received her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, Augusta University Student Government Association President John Blalock, a rising fourth-year political science student, attended the ceremony as a university representative.

Serving as an example of the student experience, Blalock balances academic achievement with active campus involvement. Recently named AU’s 2025 Student Leader of the Year, he is a member of the Interfraternity Council and Delta Chi Fraternity, co-founder of the Marrs Project and works alongside the New Student and Family Transitions team to train and mentor more than 30 Orientation Leaders while helping plan and implement Orientation programming.

“Academic Recognition Day highlights the life-changing impact that higher education and student opportunity can have across the state of Georgia,” Blalock said. “Representing Augusta University was an honor because it allowed me to share the experiences, achievements and perspectives of a campus community that has given me so many opportunities to grow as a leader.”

Scott Wallace, PhD, associate vice president and AU’s dean of students, serves as SGA advisor and has witnessed firsthand Blalock’s hard work, tenacity and leadership skills.

“All of our students who have been recognized in recent years are involved in the life of AU,” Wallace said. “John is about to embark on his second term as SGA president. That is a remarkable testament to the AU experience, which is dedicated to producing well-rounded scholars who are prepared to be leaders in our great state.”

Blalock’s involvement across campus reflects the institution’s commitment to supporting students both inside and outside the classroom through leadership development, engagement opportunities and mentorship. Wallace added that Blalock’s purposeful leadership and willingness to take on new challenges reflect AU’s Four to Finish principles and have contributed greatly to his success as a student leader.

For Blalock, attending Academic Recognition Day offered a broader perspective on the impact higher education can have across the state.

“Academic Recognition Day was a meaningful reminder of how much impact the University System of Georgia has on students across the state, both academically and personally,” he said. “It was inspiring to be surrounded by students, faculty and leaders who are all committed to making a difference through education.”
