World AIDS Day events include luminary lighting, free testing

What: Free, rapid HIV testing, a panel on the history of stigma and HIV, and a luminary lighting are planned to mark World AIDS Day at Georgia Regents University.

Background: World AIDS Day is traditionally held on Dec. 1 and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people who are living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died. Approximately 35 million people worldwide are currently living with HIV/AIDS.

When and Where: Several events are planned at the GRU Summerville campus, 2500 Walton Way. They include:

• A free screening of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, followed by a discussion panel, “Shame, Suffering, Silence: The History of Stigma and HIV,” at 5 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Jaguar Student Activities Center Ballroom
• Free HIV testing by the Ryan White Program Mobile HIV Testing Van from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 1 at Summerville fountain. Tables with campus and community resources will be located nearby at the JSAC Breezeway
• A luminary lighting and testimonials with local healthcare providers, clergy and authors at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 at the outdoor “teardrop” area adjacent to the D. Douglas Barnard, Jr. Amphitheatre
