Celebrating the official school tartan

Augusta University is unveiling the school’s official tartan at noon March 7 at the D. Douglas Barnard Jr. Amphitheatre. Dr. Neil MacKinnon, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, has spearheaded its development. “Our new, official Augusta University tartan, which has been uniquely designed for AU and registered in Scotland, adds pride and a fun, new tradition for our university,” said MacKinnon.

President Brooks A. Keel, PhD, will also be in attendance as both will wear the new tartan kilts.

Junior Model United Nations program will introduce students to climate change

Middle school students from around the CSRA will participate in the annual Junior Model United Nations program from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 9 in the Dr. Roscoe Williams Ballroom at the Jaguar Student Activities Center. The Department of Social Sciences in the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science is hosting the event. The theme this year is climate change and environmental security.

“I wanted our Junior Model UN participants to know that not all adults are ignoring climate change and that the UN is acting in various ways to curb the climate crisis, and to give them an idea of why the climate crisis seems so insurmountable,” said Nadia Jilani-Hyler, senior lecturer of political science.

Augusta University artist to have work displayed at “Super Bowl” of the art world

Assistant professor in new media Marianna Williams will have one of her exhibits on display at the 59th Venice Biennale in Italy. Williams calls the event the “Super Bowl” of the art world and her submission has been several years in the making.

“This project has been the largest exhibition I’ve ever done in my career, and raised over $40,000 in grants to fund it, produce it and ship it, and it’s been a major work of love,” she said. Williams went to high school at Augusta Prep and has created exhibits in Los Angeles as well as the annual Westobou Festival in Augusta.

Women’s golf team will tee it up for their lone home tournament

The Augusta University women’s golf team will host the Valspar Augusta Invitational March 12 and 13 at Forest Hills Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament features some of the top programs from around the country. Admission is free both days of the tournament.
