Submit the FAFSA by the priority deadline to maximize aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is open for the 2026-27 award year, with a priority deadline of May 1, 2026. Used to determine eligibility for federal and state aid, the FAFSA continues to reflect updates from the FAFSA Simplification Act, ensuring a streamlined submission process.

“When we went through FAFSA simplification, there were a lot of changes but many of those issues have been smoothed out, and we’re continuing to see a very efficient process with a much more expedited approach compared to what we had a couple of years ago,” said Kyle Parsons, director of Student Financial Aid. “Because the income information now transfers directly from the IRS, it really streamlines the process and makes it more efficient for students and their families completing the income portion.”

Parsons emphasized the importance of meeting the May 1 priority deadline to be considered for the maximum amount of financial aid. Students who file by the deadline can expect to receive offers by early summer, typically a few weeks after the deadline.

He recommends that students use their correct home address, especially if they have recently moved, keep track of login credentials and ensure a parent or guardian is added to the application if they are filing as a dependent student. Dependent students should also coordinate with their parent or guardian when completing the form, since the parent must provide consent for their financial information to be transferred and included in the application.

“There are several funds available for students, but the amount of funding is limited, and we want to ensure all students who have applied for the FAFSA are considered before those funds are depleted,” Parsons said. “Students who submit their FAFSA by the priority deadline will receive full consideration for some of our limited funding.”

In addition to filing on time, Parsons recommends students review recent changes in the types of financial aid being offered and Augusta University’s course program of study policy.

Students can also make an in-person or online appointment with the Office of Student Financial Aid, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to receive one-on-one assistance with completing the FAFSA.
