Registration open for American Sign Language course

Registration is open for American Sign Language courses at Augusta University. Augusta University is offering classes that will begin July 18 for those interested titled “A Basic Course in American Sign Language.”

Students taking the courses will start with the Beginning Course, move on to the Intermediate Course and end with the Advanced Course. Additional courses are available once you have completed the advanced course.

“A Basic Course in American Sign Language” is an opportunity for students and members of the community to learn a new language, and no medical background is required. All courses are eligible for Continuing Education Units for Nursing. Each course level takes eight weeks to complete and all use the same textbook A Basic Course in American Sign Language.

A Basic Course in ASL – Beginning Level (Chapters 1-7)

Date: July 18 through September 5, 2018 (Wednesday’s)
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Location: AUHealth Annex I Building, on 15th Street (across from Pizza Hut) North Entrance, Room 1151
Cost: $50.00 plus $45.00 for text

A Basic Course in ASL – Intermediate Level (Chapters 8-14)

Date: September 19 through November 14, 2018 (Wednesday’s) (no class 10/31/18)
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Location: AUHealth Annex I Building, on 15th Street (across from Pizza Hut) North Entrance, Room 1151
Cost: $50.00 plus $45.00 for text

A Basic Course in ASL – Advanced Level (Chapters 15-22)

Date: January 9 through February 27, 2019 (Wednesday’s)
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Cost: $50.00 plus $45.00 for text

American Sign Language – Plus

Date: April 17 through June 5, 2019 (Wednesday’s)
Time: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Cost: $60.00 (no text required)

100 Medical Signs You Need to Know – Part I

Date: July 16 through August 20, 2018 (Monday’s)
Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Location: AUHealth Annex I Building, on 15th Street (across from Pizza Hut) North Entrance, Room 1151
Cost: $40.00 (no text)
Details: This course was designed to teach health care workers and other hospital staff about the basics of American Sign Language including medical signs that will allow them to better communicate with deaf and hard of hearing patients.
