Program explores the value of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession

Anyone with questions about the career options available for attorneys is encouraged to attend “Interested in Becoming an Attorney?,” a free program exploring the value of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

Sponsored by the State Bar of Georgia’s Committee to Promote Inclusion in the Profession, the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, and Augusta University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the program is the brainchild of Laverne Lewis Gaskins, senior legal advisor for Augusta University.

“Because the theme is the value of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, we want to have in attendance those students who are aspiring lawyers,” Gaskins said. “We are encouraging juniors and seniors to attend and ask questions about the process involved to become an attorney.”

Confirmed speakers include State Court Judge David Watkins,  U.S. Attorney Edward Tarver, Georgia State Sen. Harold Jones II, Solicitor General Kellie McIntyre and Public Defender Katherine Mason. These distinguished speakers were chosen to reflect the range of careers available to those who choose to become attorneys.

“We want the attendees to see lawyers in various roles,” Gaskins said. “This is an opportunity for students to learn about all aspects of the legal profession.”

The program, which runs from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, in room 235 of the Jaguar Student Activities Center, is free and open to the public.
