Augusta University welcomes the Class of 2028, which is projected to be the largest incoming class. Meet our first-year students!
HISTORY
The Class of 2028 will graduate the year of the 200th anniversary of AU’s legacy institution, the Medical College of Georgia.
NAMES
We have a two-way tie this year for most common first name – Elizabeth and Mia with 10 students each.
As for last names, we have three new last names taking the top three spots – Smith with 16 students, Williams with 13 students and Brown rounding out the top 3 with 10 students.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
The most common hometown within the CSRA is Evans with 189 students calling it home, while outside the CSRA, Lawrenceville, Georgia, 136 miles from Augusta, is home to 39 incoming students.
The average distance these students have traveled to Augusta University is 86 miles.
This year’s class represents 19 U.S. states and 12 countries.
FAR FROM HOME
One incoming freshman is traveling 1,432 miles to Augusta, Georgia, from San Juan, Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States and the smallest island of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean, located east of the Dominican Republic. Its official languages are Spanish and English.
The shortest flight from Augusta Regional Airport to Luiz Munoz Marin International Airport, with a stop at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, would take roughly 6 hours and there are no direct flights.
ALMA MATERS
Greenbrier High School in Evans, Georgia, takes the top spot on the list of local high schools with the most students coming in this year, with 96 students.
Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, which is about 150 miles from AU outside of Atlanta, is again the top non-local school, funneling in 30 students this year, doubling its number from last year.
SMART COOKIES
This year’s class boasts 163 students with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages in high school and 3 students with perfect ACT scores.
AGES
The oldest student in the incoming freshman class is 25, born in 1999. A few highlights of that year include:
- The Euro was introduced and became the official currency for Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
- “The Sopranos,” “Family Guy,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “The West Wing” all debuted on television.
- Movies “The Matrix,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “The Mummy,” “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace,” “American Pie,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Being John Malkovich,” “American Beauty,” “The World is Not Enough” and “Toy Story 2,” premiered in theaters.
- Tiger Woods won his first PGA Championship at the age of 23.
- American runner Michael Johnson broke the 400-meter world record with a time of 43.18.
- Serena Williams won her first Grand Slam title in the US Open.
- The 6 billionth human was born.
- PayPal was viewed as one of the 10 worst business ideas of 1999.
The youngest student is 15, born in 2009. A few highlights from that year include:
- The cryptocurrency “bitcoin” was created, providing a new digital currency.
- Pilot Chesley Sullenberger landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in NYC. All passengers and crew members survived in what became known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”
- Jamaican runner Usain Bolt won the 100-meter with a new world record of 9.58 seconds.
- “Parks and Recreation,” “Glee,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Modern Family,” “Community” and “NCIS: LA” debuted on television, while “The Guiding Light” ended its 72-year run.
- “Star Trek,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Up,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” “Avatar,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” debuted in theaters.
- A blue moon and a lunar eclipse occurred on the same day – New Year’s Eve.

The top declared majors for the Class of 2028 are pre-nursing with 221 students, biology with 198 students and business administration with 95 students.
