Kinlaw bioethics lectures continue today

Internationally recognized bioethicist Kathy Kinlaw will be at Augusta University on March 3 and 4 as the Alan Roberts Visiting Professor of Ethics.

Kinlaw is the associate director of the Emory University Center for Ethics and the director of the center’s program in health, science and ethics.

Her noon lecture on March 3, “Conversations and Decisions at the End of Life,” will take place at the J. Harold Harrison, M.D. Education Commons and be directed at medical and health sciences students.

Lunch will be available.

At 8 a.m. on March 4, Kinlaw will lead Pediatric Grand Rounds in the Health Sciences Building. According to Dr. William Strong, who chairs the ethics committee and is currently responsible for developing the Center of Bioethics and Health Policy, this very interactive session is open to other clinical departments as well.

“I hope this is well-attended, because it is an excellent opportunity to hear one of the leading voices in the field in a very intimate atmosphere,” Strong said.

Then at noon, Kinlaw will give the Alan Roberts Memorial Ethics Lecture in the Lee Auditorium. The lecture, titled “Decision Making Capacity and the Limits of Autonomy,” is open to all Augusta University Medical Center faculty, residents and staff. In addition, students and friends of Alan Roberts are encouraged to attend.

“The lecture itself impacts everyone because we’re all involved in the health decision process,” Strong said. “There is obviously a strong professional component to this, but these are issues that we should all be aware of on a personal level, too.”
