Jags Baseball Moves Season Opener To Jan. 31 At Home

GRU Augusta readjusts beginning of 2015 schedule, featuring 27 home games

The GRU Augusta Jaguars will host the non-conference Newberry Wolves on Saturday Jan. 31 for a season-opening single game at 2:00 p.m. in Lake Olmstead Stadium.

New legislation passed at last weekend’s NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C., allows Division II schools to start spring seasons on the Friday prior to February 1 when that date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Nearly 87 percent of votes were in favor of the new rule.

With the legislation opening up January 30 and 31 for competition this season, the Jaguar baseball team announced the following schedule adjustments.

The Jaguars host Newberry Jan. 31 for a 2:00 p.m. game, before hitting the road the next morning to play Newberry at 3:00 p.m. in Newberry, S.C., on Sunday, Feb. 1.

GRU met Newberry twice last year in the 2014 season and lost each – the last on April 1, 2014 in 10-2 loss at home. On Feb. 19, 2014, the Jags were leading 3-1 heading into the seventh, when the Wolves put up four in the bottom of the inning and three in the eighth to seal an 8-4 win.

Jags Baseball head coach Jason Eller enters his second season at the helm for the Jaguars alongside assistant coaches Mark Mortimer and Robbie Wachman. The Jaguars welcome 21 new faces to the team and return 17, looking to improve on last year’s record of 19-31 overall, the team’s best finish since the 2011 season.
