Faculty Spotlight: Allison Buchanan, DMD

Recipient of the Outstanding Faculty for The Dental College of Georgia Award

“A true servant leader.”

The list of accolades to nominate Allison Buchanan, DMD, for the Outstanding Faculty Award for the Dental College of Georgia included a myriad of accomplishments in her 14 year-career at Augusta University, concluding with, “She has been a true servant leader for her college, university and profession.”

Her why? The students. “They make the job fun,” she said.

Buchanan, professor and associate chair for the Department of Oral Biology and Diagnostic Sciences in the Dental College of Georgia, was once a student in the dental college, then a part of the Medical College of Georgia. She graduated with her DMD in Dentistry in 2005. She knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of instruction at Augusta University.

“It means a great deal to be recognized for working hard and being dedicated, and I am very grateful for this recognition,” Buchanan said. “There are a lot of other great faculty that deserve recognition as well, so keep up the good work with the faculty accolades.”

Buchanan, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist, teaches at both the pre-doctoral and graduate levels and is an active clinical researcher, focusing on cone-beam computed tomography and digital radiography, while providing an overread referral service for local and remote practitioners.

In addition to her own publications and presentations at national meetings, Buchanan has served as a mentor for several student projects, a role she will continue to make a priority.

“My goal is to keep working hard and trying my best to help the students succeed, provide excellent patient care and strive to be positive, helpful and encouraging to others,” she said.
