Dr. Hergott is a licensed physical therapist who specializes in aging and exercise. She is a Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist, an ACSM-Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist, and an APTA-Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults. She promotes physical activity and fall prevention through her work on the APTA-NCOA Task Force, APTA Geriatrics Health and Wellness Special Interest Group, and the Exercise is Medicine Clinical Practice Committee.

Colleen Hergott, DPT, an associate professor of physical therapy in the College of Allied Health Sciences, received the Certificate in Teaching Excellence for Student Success this semester. She praised the work of the Center for Instructional Innovation, mentioning the incredible number of resources available to faculty as well as the unwavering support the team has for faculty campus wide. “The CII faculty are so helpful and ready to support us as faculty however they can,” Hergott said. “The workshops are excellent; they’re super engaging and practical. I always come away with something to use in my classroom.”

To prepare for interprofessional collaboration, educational programs should offer opportunities for interprofessional education. We created a four-hour geriatric interprofessional workshop addressing cognition, macular degeneration, dysphagia, home safety, fall risk, and pharmacotherapy to examine student perceptions of working in interprofessional teams and their attitudes toward geriatric patients.

The aim of this pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to examine whether exercise plus usual care improves the primary outcome of executive function, and secondary physiological (inflammation, metabolic aging, epigenetics) and behavioral (cognition, psychological health, physical function, and falls) outcomes compared to usual care alone among PWD.

Knowledge and use of evidence-based programs for older adults in the community: a survey of physical therapy professionals

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality highlights the need for sustainable linkages between clinical and community settings to enhance prevention and improve care of people with chronic conditions. The first step in promoting linkages is understanding the knowledge and use of evidence-based programs by physical therapy (PT) professionals. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the knowledge and referral to evidence-based programs in the community by a convenience sample of PT professionals and to examine the characteristics of those who refer to evidence-based programs.
