Eric Kern named associate vice president for sponsored programs

Eric M. Kern has been selected as the new associate vice president for Sponsored Programs and executive director of the Augusta University Research Institute, effective Jan. 12, 2026. Most recently, Kern served as the senior director for Research Strategic Initiatives at the University of South Florida.

A pioneer in digital transformation, Kern has implemented enterprise systems, developed dashboards and reporting tools, and advanced the use of artificial intelligence to streamline workflows and support strategic decision-making. His approach blends long-range vision with a deep understanding of research administration, financial compliance, and cross-functional operations.

“Eric Kern is an outstanding addition to our research enterprise. He will institute processes that save us time and effort and help to maximize our research funding,” said David C. Hess, MD, dean of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University and interim executive vice president for Research and Innovation.

An executive leader with over 15 years of experience in research administration, compliance and financial stewardship, Kern spent the last 11 years at USF in progressively expanding leadership roles within research and innovation. He brings a strong record of modernizing research enterprises, strengthening administrative infrastructure and building service models that empower faculty researchers and advance institutional missions.

“Augusta University is charting an extraordinary course, with a bold commitment to discovery, innovation and community impact,” Kern said. “I’m honored to join the Jaguar community at this pivotal moment to help refine and elevate a research enterprise driven by operational excellence and positioned for national prominence as a preeminent research institution.”

During his time at USF, Kern provided executive leadership for a $738 million research portfolio – spanning federal, state, industry and clinical trial funding – and a $7 million operating budget, ensuring financial sustainability, faculty support and institutional compliance. This included delivering $500,000 in recurring annual savings through optimizing service delivery and refining contract and award operations.

He also directed implementation of the Huron Research Suite and enterprise dashboards, advancing the use of AI-enabled tools to enhance transparency and support executive decision-making. He also partnered with faculty, administrators and sponsors to strengthen service delivery, reduce administrative burden and align operational support with research growth priorities.

“We are absolutely delighted to lure someone of Eric’s caliber to this key leadership role. Eric brings a wealth of experience, energy, and a sense of strategy to Augusta University,” said Christopher McKinney, associate vice president for Innovation Commercialization and interim associate vice president for Sponsored Programs and interim executive director of the Research Institute.

Earlier in his career, Kern developed a broad operational perspective through roles in higher education and industry, including positions at the University of California, Irvine, Central Michigan University and Logistics Team. These experiences helped shape his integrated, solutions-oriented approach to research administration.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2008 and a Master of Business Administration in 2010, both from Central Michigan.
