Director of jazz studies wins JazzTimes ‘Best Trombone’ award

Wycliffe Gordon, Augusta University’s director of jazz studies, was recently named “Best Trombone” in the 2021 JazzTimes Readers’ Poll for his work in 2021.

Published since 1970, JazzTimes, “America’s Jazz Magazine,” provides comprehensive coverage of the jazz scene. Voting for the 2021 JazzTimes Readers’ Poll was conducted via a survey posted on the magazine’s website.

“We are so fortunate and honored to have Wycliffe on our music faculty. This award is only one of many in his illustrious career,” said Dr. Angela Morgan, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music.

This newest recognition adds to Gordon’s extensive list of accolades. The Jazz Journalists Association has named him “Trombonist of the Year” an unprecedented 13 times, and the Downbeat Critics Poll has awarded him “Best Trombone” six times.
