Jorge Cortes, MD, director of Augusta University’s Georgia Cancer Center, GRA/Whitaker Eminent Scholar in Cancer and professor in the Department of Medicine in the Medical College of Georgia, will lead a new medical journal being created to educate physicians across the globe about new developments of global impact in blood cancer and disorders.
The journal, Blood Global Hematology, is the newest publication being launched by the American Society of Hematology (ASH). This prestigious position recognizes Cortes’ extensive contributions to the field of hematology and his commitment to advancing global health.
“I’ve worked extensively with patients, clinicians and investigators from all over the world, and I know firsthand the scale of global research,” Cortes said. “Blood Global Hematology will be a home for research done anywhere in the world and a voice for the global hematologic research community. Our aim will be for this journal to improve science and patient care worldwide.”
Cortes, an internationally recognized expert in leukemia, brings his knowledge and experience of treating patients with leukemia to the journal, being at the forefront of innovative research developing new treatment options for various types of leukemias, as well as serving as an author on numerous high-impact manuscripts on the topic. His expertise and leadership are expected to shape Blood Global Hematology into a leading publication, highlighting groundbreaking research projects and clinical practices benefiting patients worldwide.
Cortes expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “It is an honor to be selected as the first editor of Blood Global Hematology. I am excited to work with the brightest minds in hematology in the world to disseminate knowledge that transcends borders and benefits all.”
ASH is the world’s largest professional society for hematologists. Since its establishment in 1958, the organization and its leaders have played a pivotal role in advancing the field of hematology through research, patient care, education, training and advocacy.
Their new journal aims to bridge the gap between research and practice, providing a platform for scientists and clinicians to share their findings and collaborate on solutions to the most pressing challenges in global hematology. Under Cortes’ leadership, Blood Global Hematology will prioritize high-quality, peer-reviewed articles that push the boundaries of knowledge and improve patient care.
The inaugural issue of Blood Global Hematology will begin accepting manuscript submissions later this year. To support authors from low- and middle-income countries, there will be no submission fees. Physicians and scientists are allowed to submit their publications on a wide range of topics, including the latest advancements in blood disorders, treatment strategies and global health initiatives.
