Computer science endowment celebrates this year’s recipients

The late Victor Rattner’s trailblazing spirit continues to inspire students at Augusta University’s School of Computer and Cyber Sciences through an endowed scholarship fund established in his memory.

After a diving accident left him a quadriplegic, Rattner began his studies in computer science at then-Augusta College. Despite his challenges, Rattner maintained a positive outlook, refusing to let his disability define him.

That pioneering spirit is one SCCS continues to instill in students as they navigate their own journeys and overcome challenges.

Today, the legacy of the former student lives on through a $2.4 million endowment, established by Rattner and his mother Lillian, that supports students pursuing a degree in computer science, with a particular emphasis on those with disabilities or financial need who exemplify remarkable academic achievement.

This year, the Lillian P. & Victor Rattner Scholarship ceremony, held at the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center, honored 13 students. The scholarship covers expenses including tuition, course materials and room and board, allowing recipients to focus fully on their academic goals without the financial burden.

“Every year it’s inspiring to celebrate students who receive this award,” said Alexander Schwarzmann, PhD, dean of the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences. “Victor’s memory lives on as these students honor his legacy, building paths that lead to their own success.”

Parents like Angie Rutland expressed particular pride in their children’s achievements.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to receive this support,” said Rutland, mother of recipient Kyle Rutland. “I couldn’t be prouder of him for staying committed, and we’re truly grateful to the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences for supporting their students in every way possible.”

The scholarship is open to all SCCS students who meet the criteria, regardless of background, carrying forward Rattner’s legacy of resilience and opportunity for future generations.
