Clinical trial may offer solution to adults with sickle cell disease

Alexis Jones-Heggs has battled sickle cell disease throughout her life, but now, thanks to a bone marrow transplant, she might be closer to being cured. Dr. Jeremy Mark Pantin, a professor in the  Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University’s Department of Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, performed the transfer.

“When their (the donor’s) marrow takes over, it will produce red blood cells without sickle cell disease,” Pantin said. “It’s the only cure right now.”
