Kim Capehart, DDS, has been named associate dean for academic affairs and advanced education at Augusta University’s Dental College of Georgia, Dean Nancy Young, DMD, announced.
“Dr. Capehart is a bridge-builder who will create coalitions. We are looking forward to his future success,” she said.
Capehart, chair of the DCG Student Affairs Committee and associate professor in the Department of General Dentistry, will oversee all aspects of academic affairs and the residency programs at the DCG. His office will manage registration, grading and student records for all professional programs, as well as accreditation.
He will be responsible for making sure that the Dental College of Georgia complies with all state and federal regulations, including developing and implementing policies and procedures, conducting audits and taking corrective action when necessary. The associate dean also works with other parts of Augusta University, such as the predoctoral and dental residency programs and the faculty practice, to ensure that they are also in compliance.
Preparing for the upcoming Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) site visit is at the top of his mind.
“The Dental College of Georgia will continue to demonstrate the highest standards and provide residents with the most comprehensive training possible,” Capehart said. “The CODA Accreditation shows that we do that, and we intend to have no areas for improvement.”
Capehart, who was named a Fellow by the Pierre Fauchard Academy in early 2024, will focus on strategic growth and innovation in teaching in masters, doctorate and post-doctoral programs. He intends to align courses for improved collaboration and transparency through curriculum and topic mapping. This will encourage cooperation and communication between faculty, provide a transparent feedback and evaluation standard and mapped student progress to each subject, unit and level.
He is confident that this strategy will provide comprehensive guidance to continual improvement and strengthen DCG academic and residency experiences.
Capehart is a co-faculty adviser for DCG’s chapter of the American Student Dental Association, former president of the Eastern District Dental Society of the Georgia Dental Association, test constructor for the Integrated National Board Dental Examination, site visitor for CODA and a journal reviewer for five different journals. He has been inducted into the OKU Honor Society and was the 2018 recipient of the Judson C. Hickey Outstanding Faculty Award.
Capehart holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Marshall University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from West Virginia University. He has also completed a Master of Business Administration and Management from Regis University and a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.
