Augusta University will again remember the victims of domestic violence and celebrate those who have survived in a series of events in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Coordinated by the Augusta University Domestic Violence Awareness Month Committee with SafeHomes of Augusta Domestic Violence Center, Augusta Tech and Paine College, the events raise awareness and unite those working to end abuse.
This year’s events include:
CSRA Sexual Violence, Dating Violence, and Domestic Violence Lecture and Panel Discussion: 3 p.m. Oct. 18, 170 University Hall. Speaker Sherrie Allsup, an advocate and sexual assault educator, will be sharing “A Survivor’s Story” in order to raise awareness about sexual, dating and domestic violence.
Purple Thursday Spirit Day and Donation Drive: 11 a.m. Oct. 19, Summerville Teardrop and JSAC Breezeway. Stand against gender-based bullying, abuse and violence by wearing purple in recognition of GLAAD’s Spirit Day and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s Purple Thursday. Supplies for SafeHomes of Augusta will be collected. View for a list of accepted items.
One Love Escalation Workshop: 6 p.m. Oct 24, JASAC Ballroom on the Summerville Campus. Learning the warning signs of intimate partner abuse and how the red flags escalate over time. The film “Escalation” will be screened, after which a guided discussion will be led by trained peer educators.
SafeHomes Survivors’ Walk: 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26, Summerville Teardrop. The annual ceremony features testimonies from domestic violence survivors, a balloon release and a candlelight walk to honor victims.
