Augusta University planning for safe reopening of campus in fall

Augusta University is finalizing a plan to resume face-to-face instruction for the fall semester. The health of students, faculty and staff is a top priority, and all 26 University System of Georgia institutions are currently developing complex plans to ensure the safe reopening of campuses across the state, pending approval from Gov. Brian Kemp and state public health officials.

Augusta University Provost Gretchen Caughman, PhD, said a committee has been named to plan for reopening campus in the fall.

“We’re excited to welcome back returning students and to see our freshman class experience their first semester on campus this fall. Our students are the life of our campus, and we can’t wait to have their energy back at AU,” Caughman said. “Health and safety are first on the list for the teams planning reopening and will continue to be a priority as the semester goes on.”

The USG will work in tandem with the governor’s office, the governor’s COVID-19 Task Force, and the Georgia Department of Public Health to make public health-informed decisions affecting the status of all campuses in the system.

While dates for events like Freshman Convocation and Housing Move-In are yet to be finalized, Augusta University’s fall academic calendar will now start Aug. 10 and include a weeklong fall break from Nov. 9-13 to coincide with the recently rescheduled Masters Tournament.

“I want to thank our provost, faculty and students for their ingenuity and flexibility,” said Augusta University President Brooks A. Keel, PhD. “These are unique times that call for out-of-the-box solutions, but we remain committed to doing the right thing for our students and our community.”
