The CREW sponsors off-campus trips for students

With student life opportunities constantly improving at Augusta University, The Jaguar Production CREW has introduced a new series to encourage off-campus involvement: “ExCREWsions.”

ExCREWsions — hosted and organized by The CREW, the program’s namesake — is a student involvement initiative that was introduced just this semester. This initiative funds tickets for various off-campus events both in the Augusta community and beyond, which help Augusta University students use their time in college as an opportunity to explore both the Augusta area and the greater Georgia community.

So far, there have been two ExCREWsions in Fall 2019, and both have been local. On Aug. 24, The CREW sponsored tickets to an Augusta GreenJackets game, which included dinner at the stadium. A total of 108 students attended the event.

The second ExCREWsion was to the local Arts in the Heart festival. The CREW purchased 200 weekend passes and every pass was claimed, giving dozens of AU students access to all three days of the festival.

“We wanted to begin the ExCREWsions locally,” said LaTisha Joiner, coordinator for student involvement at Augusta University. “Those first two events were a starting point to see how things would go in the first half of the semester.”

But now that midterms and Fall Pause are behind the campus community, The CREW is raising the bar. The next two ExCREWsions this semester will be to Six Flags Fright Fest on Oct. 26, and then to the Atlanta Hawks game on Nov. 23.

“If we find that these next two events are successful, we’ll continue with this new component of activities and will work to improve it. We’re looking forward to sending more students, as long as there’s interest,” said Joiner.

But there seems to be interest so far. “The CREW receives inquiries every day regarding when tickets will be available to claim, so students definitely want to get involved,” Joiner explained.

The CREW plans to sponsor 70 tickets to Six Flags and 80 tickets to the Hawks game. An email will go out to students when tickets are available for claiming, and they’re issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
