Expect more growing pains as DOT project to improve 15th Street progresses
The sidewalk flanking the west side of 15th Street between Laney-Walker Boulevard and Pope Avenue will be closed for six to eight weeks beginning Friday, Aug. 16, for sidewalk and driveway replacement as the city of Augusta and Georgia Department of Transportation continue making improvements along the 15th Street corridor.
Construction will affect hundreds of students, faculty and staff who park across 15th Street from Augusta University Medical Center and Professional Building 1, particularly those who park in Lots 30 and 35 and cross traffic to the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home from the hospital. Pedestrians must cross 15th Street from the south side of Laney-Walker and the north side of Pope Avenue.
Temporary signage will be erected to guide students, faculty, staff and other pedestrian traffic around the work areas to the signalized intersections at Laney Walker and Pope.
Vehicle access into adjacent parking lots will be maintained. However, the stairs at Lots 30 and 35 and from Georgia War on the courtyard side down to the 15th Street sidewalk will be closed, so please plan your walk accordingly.
Sidewalk replacement construction on the hospital side (east) of 15th Street will occur later in 2019. We will share information with you here in Jagwire when the DOT identifies specific dates.
