Public Administration program doubles in size

As another semester begins, more students are filling seats in public administration classes than ever.

Since spring 2016, the master of public administration program has grown by more than 100 percent and experienced a 49 percent increase in enrollment.

Currently, the program has 55 students training for careers in public service, according to Dr. William Hatcher, associate professor and director of the public administration program.

Hatcher believes there are many factors that contributed to the growth of the program.

“The program’s growth can be attributed to its excellent faculty, the interactive nature of the program’s courses, and the overall success of the program’s alumni,” he said.

An increase in enrollment isn’t just great news for the public administration program, however. This growth will also affect the city.

“The growth is great for the Augusta community,” Hatcher said. “Having more MPA alumni in the community will improve the governing capacity of the Augusta metro.”

The public administration program educates students interested in careers with the government or nonprofit organizations. Students interested in advancing careers in law enforcement and/or social activism may elect to specialize in criminal justice. Students also have the option to receive a certificate in nonprofit leadership. This certificate provides the necessary tools to students interested in leading nonprofit organizations.
