Program paves way for medical school

Shelby Howard and Aditi Talkad are set to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology, but they’re already students of the Medical College of Georgia thanks to the university’s B.S./M.D. program. Howard and Talkad are among the program’s first cohort to begin medical school this fall, and they spoke with The Augusta Chronicle on how teamwork and perseverance are helping them stay focused on their academic journey.

The B.S./M.D. program lays out a curriculum that allows students to earn their bachelor of science and medical degrees in eight years. It offers conditional medical school acceptance on entry to the program.

The program also provides students opportunities for counseling, MCAT preparation, and other clinical or research experiences over the course of their undergrad careers. Bachelor’s degrees, in cellular and molecular biology or chemistry, will be awarded through the College of Science and Mathematics.
