In an attempt to enhance patient throughput, a Patient Discharge Lounge is being piloted on 5 North in the Oncology Library, located right across from the South elevators on 5N (BA5301). The lounge opened at 1 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2015, and provides a comfortable place for patients to wait for transportation home. The lounge closes at 7 p.m. daily and operates Monday through Friday when needed.
The primary goal of the Discharge Lounge is to increase hospital throughput efficiency by identifying a location for patients to wait for transportation after discharge.
To make the area more inviting, the lounge has three patient recliners, computer access, TV, snacks and various drinks (Keurig, for example). Patient Transport handles patient movement to and from the lounge.
The nurse manager championing this lounge is Endia Veal, RN. She currently manages 4 West (Surgical), 5 South (Stem Cell), 5 North (Oncology) and 7 South (Medicine). The staff is comprised of two patient care technicians and volunteers.
