Meet Augusta University First Lady Karen Keen

Karen Keen, the new First Lady of Augusta University, is well known to many on campus and in the community.

For the past nine years, Karen has been a steady presence in the campus community through alumni events, community activities, advocacy functions and government relations meetings.

She has also been actively engaged as a board member on the Wellstar MCG Health Children’s Hospital of Georgia Philanthropy Board.

She and Augusta University President Russell T. Keen, EdD, have been married for more than 22 years and have built their lives around faith, family and a spirit of togetherness.

“For over 22 years, Karen has been beside me as my wife, my friend, my biggest supporter and partner,” Russell Keen said. “As we approach serving Augusta University and our community in these new roles, she will be one of the biggest advocates, supporters, and voices for our students, faculty, staff, and the entire community of Augusta.”

Karen earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and a master’s degree in elementary reading and literacy. She has a passion for education as evidenced by her time in the classroom as an elementary educator for more than 15 years.

In her new role as First Lady of Augusta University, Karen said she is excited about getting more involved in advancing student success, literacy and philanthropic efforts pertaining to research, scholarships and the Children’s Hospital of Georgia.

“I am looking forward to learning more about ways we can collectively enhance student success and helping tell the story of how Augusta University and Wellstar MCG Health are making such an impactful difference in our way of life through education, research and health care,” she said. “I am looking forward to learning more about all of Augusta University’s 11 colleges so that I can help tell the full story of our university and compel others to take part in helping us achieve even greater success.”

The Keens will be visiting all of AU’s colleges, centers and institutes and said they look forward to connecting with as many students, faculty and staff as they possibly can.
