Mattie Mae Tarver Lawson worked with the Medical College of Georgia for over 30 years. In that time she was the first black female laparoscopy coordinator and the first female technologist chosen to be part of its first kidney transplant team. She also helped complete the first kidney transplant, helped organize the first surgical endoscopy suite and trained over 60 surgical residents in endoscopy. If you’ve wandered the fourth floor, you may have seen a plaque that rightly honors Lawson and all of the work she did for the medical college.
When speaking on her accomplishments, Lawson said, “I just wanted to do something that was deep-seated in my heart to do.”
