IE Week is the best way to see the world—on campus

It’s almost time for International Education Week!

A joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, IE Week is an opportunity for students to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. Part of Augusta University’s continuing efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment, IE Week’s ultimate goal is to help students learn and exchange experiences in their own country.

Wednesday, November 1
International Festival: A Global Perspective

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Douglas Barnard Amphitheatre (Rain location: JSAC Breezeway & Ballroom) – Summerville Campus
Come out and experience a day of Diversity at this year’s International festival: A Global perspective. There will be free food, Games, prizes, arts and crafts, activities and performances while learning about the different countries. Join The CREW for International Festival, AU’s version of Arts in the Heart. Come out and join us for an exciting festival you don’t want to miss! Global Health Interest Group Meeting: Weird and Wonderful Cases

Noon – 1 p.m.

Several Global Health faculty members will be presenting interesting clinical cases in the care of patients in resource limited settings.  Cases will focus on both tropical diseases as well as logistical challenges of caring for critically ill patients in resource limited settings. This event is open to all faculty and students who are interested.

Language Hacking—Your Journey to Foreign Language Fluency with Benny Lewis, the Irish Polyglot

Let Benny Lewis inspire you to start speaking another language! By the time he was in his 20s, Benny only spoke English, despite studying other languages for years in school. When he moved to Spain, he was sure he would start learning Spanish, but after six months he was still struggling – until something changed. Now, Benny is fluent in seven languages, earning him the title of “the Irish Polyglot.” Come hear about his language-learning techniques and his experiences living all over the world. The Cinema Series: Shin Godzilla (2016)

8 p.m.
Augusta University Maxwell Theatre
In conjunction with International Education Week and the Department of Communication’s upcoming Study Abroad trip to Japan, The Cinema Series will host a screening of the award-winning Japanese film Shin Godzilla. The Japan Academy Prize is often compared to the Academy Awards. At the 2016 edition of the Japan Academy Prize,  Shin Godzilla (translated as True Godzilla) amassed seven awards including Picture of the Year. The film is powerful and darkly humorous indictment of protracted bureaucratic response to disaster.

Shin Godzilla has a running time of 119 minutes, is rated PG-13, and will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles.

Travel to the AU Libraries to learn about the resources for study abroad and international travel available through the University Libraries and the University System of Georgia.

Oxfam Hunger Banquet

6 p.m.
JSAC Ballroom

The Oxfam Hunger Banquet is an interactive event that brings world hunger and poverty issues to life. Participants will be divided into three groups based on global percentages of hunger and plenty. Each group will be served different amounts of food and experience a different atmosphere. All proceeds from the banquet will be donated to a nonprofit organization. Hosted by International Initiatives.

The Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hailei Zhao, Adjunct Associate Professor of Physical Therapy and Associate Director of the Confucius Institute, will give a presentation on the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its perspectives on education, research, and clinical service. He will also discuss TCM’s relationship to western medicine and the future practice of medicine in the U.S.  Lunch will be provided for the first 30 attendees. Hosted by International Initiatives: Confucius Institute.

Study Abroad 201: How to Unpack Your Study Abroad Experience for Employers

Join us as we dig through your past (or future) study abroad experience to help you decipher what a future employer would like to know. We will discuss what you learned from your experience abroad, how to present your trip on a resume, and how to translate those experiences into meaningful conversations that you can use in a future job or graduate school interview. This is event is open to students who have been on a study abroad/away program as well as those that plan to go on one in the future. Lunch is provided. Integration of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Healthcare Education: Chinese Medicine in the Physical Therapy Curriculum

Dr. Debra Beazley, Assistant Professor, Dr. Jonathan Eidman, Physical Therapist and Hayden Liggett, Student Physical Therapist, Department of Physical Therapy, will present current research on the growing trend toward participation in Complementary and Alternative Therapies (CAM) and the emerging movement of CAM inclusion in healthcare education.  The presentation includes current survey and qualitative research conducted in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Curriculum.  Insights will be shared regarding student perceptions and beliefs regarding CAM education in a healthcare curriculum and the student-practitioner benefits of TCM certificate completion.    Lunch will be provided for the first 30 attendees. Hosted by CAHS:  Physical Therapy Department and International Initiatives:  Confucius Institute.
