Four ways to thank surgical technologists

Augusta University Health celebrates surgical technicians for their dedication to ensuring patient safety. Surgical technicians are health care professionals who primarily work inside operating rooms, including anesthesiologists and circulating nurses.

“From arranging the necessary equipment to setting up the operating room, surgical technologists have a vital role ensuring surgeries go well,” said Dr. Daniel Albo, chair of the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia and director of Oncology Surgical Services. “They have an extremely important role in patient care and that is why we dedicate this week to honor their efforts.”

As part of the surgical team, they work hard to make the operating room efficient. They are certainly worth celebrating during the recent National Surgical Technologists Week and every day.

Here are four ways to show your appreciation for surgical technicians:

Send them a hand-written thank you note.

What better way to show your appreciation than a hand-written thank you note? This is almost guaranteed to brighten up someone’s day. Hand-written notes take extra effort than text messages or emails so a little more effort will make a much larger impact.

Offer to volunteer.

There are so many opportunities to lend a helping hand inside of AU Health. You can demonstrate gratitude by applying to one of the many programs provided by Volunteer Services. Volunteering will allow you to get a better understanding of their daily responsibilities.

Pay it forward.

Step out of your comfort zone to find others in the community who could benefit from your assistance. You can learn more about volunteer opportunities by registering for Day of Service.

Nominate someone for superhero recognition.

If you know a technician who does outstanding work, nominate them to be recognized by the Association of Surgical Technologists as an AST “Superhero.” AST is celebrating its 50th anniversary and would like to acknowledge all surgical techs for their “superpowers

In 1984, the Association of Surgical Technologists Board of Directors dedicated the third week in September National Surgical Technologist Week. It has been celebrated every year since.
