Burgess appointed chair in allied health department

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Dr. James D. Burgess has been appointed chair of the Department of Medical, Laboratory, Imaging and Radiologic Sciences in the College of Allied Health Sciences at Augusta University. Burgess will oversee three nationally accredited professional programs, including Clinical Laboratory Science, Nuclear Medicine Technology and Radiation Therapy and a rapidly growing research agenda that attracts significant extramural funding.

Jim Burgess 4x5 (2)For the past 15 years, Burgess served on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he held progressively responsible appointments, including assistant professor and, most recently, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Burgess received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia, where he served as an assistant professor from 1998-2000. He earned a Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1997 and was a postdoctoral research associate in 1998 at Iowa State University’s Department of Energy – Ames Laboratory.

He has research interests in the development of personalized patient diagnostics, including identifying a reliable predictor of children at risk for high cholesterol. Several of his studies have received federal funding, including those on cholesterol efflux, or outflow, as a diagnostic for cystic fibrosis. He has been published extensively and has made numerous expert presentations in a variety of topics related to his work.

Burgess has served as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and the American Chemical Society. He’s also a regular reviewer of manuscripts for Analytical Chemistry, Langmuir and other specialized journals in electrochemistry and analytical chemistry.
