Breakthrough stroke treatment available at Medical College of Georgia

A medical breakthrough, available at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, is changing how strokes are treated. Georgia is recognized as one of nine states with unusually high numbers of stroke incidences. A procedure called a thrombectomy can significantly better the chances for a stroke victim, and MCG is the only Georgia hospital outside of Atlanta that offers the procedure.

“You saw the patient in the emergency room so devastated… a year ago we couldn’t have helped,” said Dr. Jeffrey Switzer, director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at MCG.  “They may not have survived, or certainly would have had their life permanently changed. And then they leave the hospital two days later as if nothing happened.”
