Augusta University experts published in American College of Radiology journal articles

A special issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology explores radiology patient engagement from the patient perspective. Original articles provide valuable insights to help radiologists make the care they provide more patient-centered.

“This issue is a first for the Journal of the American College of Radiology: Patients, caregivers and advocates serve as co-authors or reviewers, in other words, co-producers of meaningful content,” said Dr. James V. Rawson, chair of the American College of Radiology  Commission on Patient- and Family-Centered Care and chair of the Radiology Department at Augusta University. “Radiologists are redefining health care delivery; we are innovating, improving and delivering value to the doctor-patient relationship,” he added.

On an operational level, there are many opportunities for individual radiologists, practices, hospitals or radiology professional societies to improve the patient experience, according to issue’s introduction, Patient- and Family-Centered Care: Why Radiology?, which is co-written by Rawson. Patient- and Family-Centered Care: A Primer; Rawson is a co-author, along with Julie Moretz, a former PFCC administrator at the health system. This article includes information on the evolution and principles of PFCC.

Lessons Learned from Two Decades of PFCC in Radiology, Part 1: Getting Started; Rawson, Layne Mitchell, Lewis Golden and Alisa Murdock are co-authors. This abstract includes the PFCC journey that built the Children’s Hospital of Georgia and permeated the renovations at the Breast Health Center in the adult hospital.

Lessons Learned from Two Decades of PFCC in Radiology, Part 2: Building a Culture; Rawson, Mitchell, Golden and Murdock are co-authors. General radiology, MRI, and angiography areas are discussed, as well as the cancer clinic construction and pediatric radiology renovations.

Promising Approaches from Behavioral Economics to Improve Patient Lung Screening Decisions; Dr. Norman Thomson III is a co-author.
