With Georgia having one of the nation’s fastest growth rates in individuals over 50, the CHA will function as a statewide resource focused on aging research with translational projects supported through philanthropy and the National Institute on Aging.

The CHA is the first single comprehensive center in the state of Georgia focused on aging, and one of only 15 other centers across the nation, including the University of Florida, Wake Forrest University and Duke University.

Medical costs related to the treatment of chronic age-associated diseases have a significant impact on Georgia. Osteoporosis was implicated in 27,000 fractures in Georgia in the year 2000 at the cost of $323 million.

Nationally, the medical cost of osteoporosis and fractures in the United States was estimated at $22 billion in 2008. Of the estimated 5.7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease in 2018, 140,000 were Georgia residents. By 2025 the number of Georgians with Alzheimer’s is expected to be approximately 190,000. Age-related diseases such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s place a tremendous burden on families and patients.
