10 holiday safety tips from Augusta University Police

With the holiday season in full swing, the Augusta University Police Department has 10 tips to keep the JagNation community safe.

  1. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
  2. If you feel unsafe about any location for any reason, leave.
  3. Even though you might be rushed and thinking about many things, stay alert to your surroundings.
  4. Never let your purse or other personal belongings leave your sight: It only takes a second for a thief to strike.
  5. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
  6. Store your packages in the trunk of your car.
  7. Park in a well-lit area as close as possible to store entrances.
  8. When shopping online, only purchase goods from websites you know to be legitimate. Check with the Better Business Bureau if unsure.
  9. Check your bank and credit card statements regularly. If you see unauthorized activity, contact your financial institution immediately.
  10. Avoid leaving the boxes for expensive items like TVs and PCs out for trash collection, to prevent thieves from knowing exactly what you have in your residence.
