Pride of the Jaguar Battalion: Joshua Roden

Each month, Jagwire features a cadet who is enrolled in Augusta University’s ROTC program and a member of the Jaguar Army ROTC Battalion. For February, we spoke with Cadet Joshua Roden.

Where are you from and what high school did you attend?

I am from Grovetown, Georgia, and I went to Grovetown High School.

Why did you choose to attend Augusta University?

I chose to attend Augusta University because it’s close to home and I was able to pursue an ROTC scholarship here.

How did you become interested in the ROTC/military?

I took interest in the military because of the respect I have for those who serve. My father is retired Navy, and my sister is currently serving in the Army and they inspire me to serve as well. Joining the military is a great opportunity to support our country, and I have always sought to do so. ROTC allows me to pursue a college education while working toward earning a career in the Army.

Why did you choose to pursue the degree that you’ve selected?

I chose to pursue information technology in the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences because I have always had an interest in the field. The innovations in technology never cease to amaze me, and the application of technologies to society are beneficial and interesting.

What are your long-term plans for the military?

I plan on commissioning active duty, and working toward advancing my military career.

What is one of the biggest misconceptions of being in the ROTC?

Many believe that ROTC is overtly strict and time-demanding, although the program is completely manageable. School and ROTC are both lifestyles that can definitely coexist. The cadre are also there to help you in any endeavors you face. As long as the program is taken seriously with a passion to one day serve, there is no need for any misconceptions in the program.

Use one word to describe cadet life.

Adaptable.

What has been the hardest adjustment to preparing for the military?

My hardest adjustment was preparing for the physical demands. Being active in ROTC and the military is nothing to take lightly. Physical fitness is of substantial importance and must always be trained.

What are you most excited about now that you are a part of Jaguar Nation and the Jaguar Battalion?

I am most excited about the vast amount of opportunities here. I know that there are many learning experiences that will contribute to my future.

Use one word to sum up your experience as a Jaguar?

Knowledgable.
