Strike Out Stroke with Augusta University and the Augusta GreenJackets

May is National Stroke Awareness Month and Augusta University is teaming up with the Augusta GreenJackets to shed light on strokes and their symptoms. At 6 p.m. May 14 at the SRP Park in North Augusta, the university’s Strike Out Stroke event will feature vendors providing blood pressure checks, stroke symptom simulations and educational information on how to control your risk for stroke. AU Health offers new implant device to treat sleep apnea

Lottie Davis’ untreated obstructive sleep apnea left her exhausted and sleepless for years. Like others with the disorder, Davis began using a CPAP machine, but to no avail. Now, doctors at Augusta University Medical Center are helping her find relief with a new device implanted in her chest that will gently move the tongue forward, allowing her to breathe better when asleep. Davis is the first patient in the Augusta area to undergo this procedure and the device will be activated for the first time on May 17.

New mobile app to improve care for expectant mothers

A new pregnancy care app developed by Augusta University Professor Marlo Vernon will give health care providers a way to monitor their patients remotely. The Vida app is being designed to provide doctors with real-time patient data, including sudden changes in blood pressure or self-reported mental health. A prototype of the app will be available in August. Vernon is an award-winning researcher, whose work covers an array of aspects of public health and human behavior, including the analysis of maternal nutrition educational needs of African-American women.
