Update: Cardboard City event to end at midnight, debut film

Update Feb. 28: Due to inclement weather, the annual Cardboard City event scheduled for March 2-March 3 will conclude at midnight on March 2. Breakfast will be served to all students who have registered or wish to stay until 11:30 p.m.
In addition, Augusta University has been selected to be the site for a special showing of the documentary film Unsheltered. The film, which is open to faculty, staff and the community, will run from 8-9 p.m. at the Maxwell Theatre.
Filmed in Augusta and featuring local leaders from the Salvation Army, Golden Harvest Food Bank and other organizations, Unsheltered shares the true life experiences of two homeless individuals during their seven-day walk down Washington Road toward Augusta’s downtown area.
For more information about the film, view the trailer.

The annual Cardboard City event will take place March 2-March 3, 2019 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. in the Grove and Maxwell Theater on Summerville Campus. The goal of the event, which is open to students, faculty and staff, is to bring awareness to homelessness. Participants should bring a backpack, sleeping bag and a cardboard box.

Participants will make their own cardboard “home”, package food for those in need, prepare care packages for the Salvation Army and compete individually or on teams for the best cardboard box.

Last spring, students packed the Amphitheater with cardboard boxes to bring awareness to homelessness. Over 170 lbs. of food were packaged and 450 care packages were prepared for the Salvation Army.

For those interested in more ways to get involved, donations are accepted and all items will benefit the Salvation Army and the Augusta University Open Paws Pantry. Donations needed included nonperishables, personal care and hygiene products and cardboard boxes. Please deliver all donations to the Academic Success Center in University Hall room 156.

Register now. The first 100 registered before Feb. 22 will receive a free T-shirt and free breakfast the next morning.

For more information about Cardboard City, contact Brittany Hatcher or call 706-667-4777. For information about donation drop off, please contact the Office of First and Second Year Experience.
