Department of Chemistry & Physics among sponsors of regional conference

The Savannah River Section of the American Chemical Society will host over 1,500 chemists, including Augusta University faculty and students, for the Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (SERMACS), which will be held at the Augusta Convention Center from Wednesday, Oct. 31 through Saturday, Nov. 3. This annual conference brings in chemists from Kentucky to Florida and Alabama to the Carolinas. It is the largest of the American Chemical Society’s regional meetings.

The conference theme is “securing tomorrow through innovation today” and features four days of technical sessions with more than 10 concurrent symposia, an exposition with over 40 vendor booths, a graduate fair with over 30 schools represented, a job fair and social and networking events.

Augusta University is a conference sponsor with contributions from the Research Department, College of Science and Mathematics and the Department of Chemistry & Physics.

Several Augusta faculty members are involved in planning the conference. Dr. Stephanie Myers, professor of chemistry, is on the conference organizing committee as the exposition chair and Dr. Brian Agee, lecturer in the Department of Chemistry & Physics, is the chair of the of the conference’s undergraduate program and also a member of the organizing committee.

Dr. Siva Panda, assistant professor of chemistry, organized a medicinal chemistry symposium for the conference. Other Augusta faculty and students will also present research and preside over symposia.

Students attending the meeting will have the opportunity to present their research at both oral and poster sessions. They will be able to attend all symposia, including some arranged particularly for undergraduates. In addition, there will be several opportunities to plan for after graduation with the graduate school fair and the job fair.
