White Coat Ceremony Kicks Off College of Nursing’s 75th Anniversary

In the first of a year-long series of events celebrating the Augusta University College of Nursing’s 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee, over 300 bachelors- and masters-level students will don their white coats on Friday, signifying their entrance into a nursing program.

The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Augusta University’s Forest Hills Campus.

Students receiving their coats will also receive lapel pins with the 75th Anniversary mark to commemorate the college’s legacy as Georgia’s first public nursing school.

“The White Coat ceremony always presents a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the students’ entry into professional nursing education. This exciting and joyous event is perfect for kicking off college’s 75th Anniversary,” said Dr. Lucy Marion, dean of the College of Nursing.

The white coat originated over 100 years ago and signifies health and cleanliness, because the white color allows the coat to be washed at high temperatures without fading. Over time the white coat has evolved into a symbol of professionalism and trust for health care professionals. White coat ceremonies are a tradition at universities throughout the nation and across a variety of health care professions.

Christenberry Fieldhouse is located at 3109 Wrightsboro Road on the Forest Hills Campus of Augusta University.
