Dr. Bogorad urges proper eye protection while watching eclipse

Dr. David Bogorad, an ophthalmologist and laser eye surgery specialist with the Eye Care Center at AU Medical Center, recently gave several interviews with the media about the importance of protecting the eyes when watching the eclipse.

He says it’s crucial for people to wear proper protection during the eclipse. “No regular sunglasses of any kind are dark enough. One thing is for sure, if you can see through the glasses in a room full of light, they are not dark enough,” Dr. Bogorad said.

When using eclipse glasses:

1. Make sure you use ISO-certified eclipse glasses.
2. Check for any pinholes in the glasses.
2. Supervise children and make sure the glasses fit them.

The one part of the eclipse when you can safely remove your glasses is during totality, he said. However, though the path of totality does cross near here, totality will not occur in Augusta, so viewers who stay in Augusta and the surrounding area should not remove their glasses.
