Visiting artist to create one-of-a-kind mural

An exhibition featuring the work of Amy Pleasant will include a mural painted by the artist on the walls of the Mary S. Byrd Gallery of Art at Augusta University.

The artist will be in-residence Jan. 9-13 to create the mural, which will be on display along with an exhibition of her work Jan. 12-Feb. 3 inside the gallery in Washington Hall on the Summerville Campus, 2500 Walton Way. Pleasant will present a lecture at 5 p.m. Jan. 12 in University Hall, room 170. A reception will follow at the gallery. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Known within the contemporary art world for her drawings, paintings and ceramic sculptures, Pleasant will premiere her first endeavor into the genre of video animation at Augusta University.

“We are so honored to host an artist of Amy’s caliber at the Mary S. Byrd Gallery of Art,” Gallery Director Shannon Morris said of Pleasant, who lives and works in Birmingham, Ala.

Pleasant’s work has been featured in galleries and museums across the country and internationally. Her work has also been featured in group shows with notable contemporaries like Carrie Mae Weems, Sam Gilliam, and 2016 Mac Arthur Fellow Mary Reed Kelly. In 2015, Pleasant was named a recipient of The Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Award.

While at Augusta University, she will also serve as juror for the 2017 Student Juried Exhibition, which opens Feb. 16. For more information or to plan your visit, see augusta.edu/byrd.
