Important safety information regarding pedestrian safety on R.A. Dent Boulevard

The following communication regarding the crossing of R.A. Dent Boulevard was distributed to all Augusta University faculty, staff and students by James Lyon, director of Public Safety.

There has been a significant increase in students, faculty and staff crossing R.A. Dent Boulevard and the railroad tracks from on and off-street parking in area neighborhoods. Both jaywalking and track crossing are dangerous behaviors that could result in serious injury.

You may not know that both are also illegal. The law requires that you:

  • Cross R.A. Dent Boulevard only at marked crosswalks
  • Cross railroad tracks only at designated crossings
  • Do not walk on railroad tracks
  • Park at least 50 feet from railroad tracks
  • Do not trespass

As of Aug. 1, the campus shuttle Gold Route stops at Lot 71 on Augusta Avenue and travels back to Lot 61 at Laney High School, which provides an additional safe option for transport. Shuttle information is available here.

We know campus parking can be challenging, and parking is an issue being addressed in future campus planning. But in the meantime, the safety of our students and personnel is our highest priority. Please be aware that you are subject to citation for these violations, and fines for trespassing on or too near railroad tracks can be up to $1,000.

Be safe — follow the law.
