Denise ParrishAUGUSTA, Ga. – You can help mend tiny hearts at Children’s Hospital of Georgia by eating pancakes at IHOP on Tuesday.
IHOP restaurants will serve free short stacks of their famous buttermilk pancakes in recognition of National Pancake Day on Tuesday, March 8. From 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., IHOP patrons are invited to make a voluntary donation to Children’s Hospital of Georgia, the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, in lieu of their meal cost, to go toward the purchase of a new patient simulator, where medical students, residents, and clinical faculty can practice their skills in pediatric heart care on a life-like mannequin.
About 8 out of 1,000 babies will be born with some form of congenital heart disorder that will require medical intervention. Experts at Children’s Hospital of Georgia routinely perform both basic and complex interventional cardiac catheterization procedures that help enhance open-heart surgery and sometimes circumvent it altogether.
Since 2006, IHOP National Pancake Day has raised about $13 million to provide life-saving treatment, programs, and medical equipment for pediatric patients — including the nearly 100,000 children treated annually at CHOG.
Participating IHOP locations are located at 3125 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta; 4361 Washington Road, Evans; and 180 Aiken Mall Drive, Aiken.
The 154-bed not-for-profit CHOG is the second-largest children’s hospital in the state, providing the highest level of pediatric critical care and neonatal intensive care, as well as a wide range of general and complex health care for children. CHOG was recently ranked as the nation’s top performing hospital in pediatric quality and safety by the University HealthSystem Consortium of academic medical centers.
